OVERVIEW & CHALLENGE Boulder Canyon Group Home is a new facility renovating an old Inn building. The facility will have 12 bedrooms to allow for up to 24 clients and 17 staff members. The existing system was installed in the right of way under the bike path. It was undersized and the pump system was not functioning. The 15.7-acre property is divided by Boulder Canyon Drive east of the existing building with Boulder Creek running alongside the east of the road. The property west of the existing building slopes almost vertically and is rocky. The system needed to be installed outside of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) right of way. The cost to build a road and blast the rock on top of the mountain was not feasible. SYSTEM DESIGN Installing part of the drainfield to the south of the building was originally planned, but then the county required the installation of 80,000-gallons of fire cistern capacity. Kate Carney, P.E., with Church Onsite Wastewater Consultants designed a system consisting of a 1,000-gallon grease interceptor tank, two 2,000-gallon single compartment septic tanks, a 2,000-gallon, recirculation/dosing tank, an Orenco AX-100 recirculating media filter and a pressurized open bottom sand filter consisting of 168 Infiltrator H-20 traffic rated chambers under the parking lot. Matthew Morgan and the team at C WS Excavating completed the installation of this system. The installation included craning the septic tanks over the building to avoid shutting down the busy road. There was limited area for the tanks to be installed outside of the CDOT right of way. Access to import sand to the area was affected by the busy road and entrance on a curve. Due to limited access, CWS Excavating had to first install the water cistern tanks before the soil treatment area. The design flexibility of Orenco and Infiltrator’s products allowed for a high performing wastewater solution on this challenging site.
