Nitrogen Reduction and the Means to Achieve It

Florida, like many other coastal states, is placing a significant focus on reducing the amount of Nitrogen discharged into the environment from various sources, particularly where it can affect Florida Springs and coastal waters. Excess Nitrogen can have detrimental effects on the health of Florida’s ecosystems and drinking water sources. The process to reduce Nitrogen levels from residential wastewater requires engineering a solution that promotes natural biochemical reactions to occur in a controlled environment. This presentation will cover the biochemical process required to convert base ammonia found in raw wastewater to nitrogen gas and how Enhanced Nitrogen Reducing Onsite Treatment and Disposal Systems facilitate that process to achieve high levels of Nitrogen reduction.


The Evolution of Rules and Regulations to Protect Florida’s Ground Water: Where They Are and Where They’re Going

Wastewater regulations and basic system requirements have become exponentially more complex in recent years, both at the county and state level. These rules and directives are not always clear in their meaning or application, and the purpose of this presentation is to provide a context for them in this rapidly changing industry. Particular attention will be paid to the new ordinances in Miami-Dade County, the Basin Management Action Plans (BMAP), and the Save Our Indian River Lagoon Program.  Additional focus will be shared on how this affects the septic engineer and what to expect in the years to come.


Decentralized Commercial Wastewater Treatment Solutions

This presentation provides an overview of decentralized, municipal and onsite wastewater treatment systems with emphasis on the commercial sector. Additional focus will be shared on fixed-bed, attached growth, biological wastewater treatment systems, and extended aeration, suspended growth wastewater treatment technologies. Commercial wastewater treatment system designs and case studies associated with convenience stores with food service, restaurants, and RV parks and campgrounds will be reviewed in detail.


Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal System (OSTDS) Drainfields Including Inground Nitrogen Reducing Biofilters (INRBs)

This presentation provides a detailed summary of what comprises a drainfield in an onsite wastewater system. Conventional drainfield designs have been in use for more than a century, but in the past several decades new technologies have been incorporated to achieve treatment in addition to dispersal. Particular attention will be made to combined treatment and dispersal options, chamber systems, and INRBs: biolfilters that utilize a passive strategy for nitrogen reduction that can be incorporated into the well-known drainfield structure.
